Spa tips for first-timers

Are you a spa virgin? Here are some tips to make your visit as stress-free as possible.

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early for your first visit. You might have to fill out paperwork, you'll need to change into a robe and slippers, and you can use the extra time to relax with a complimentary cup of soothing tea. Check with the spa to see if they want you to arrive early for every visit; some do.

Naked or not naked? If you're getting a body treatment and you're supposed to disrobe, go with what you're comfortable with. Some people would rather leave on undergarments.

The old saying about there's no such thing as a stupid question holds true. Most spas explain their services on their Web sites and are happy to answer any other questions. If you're a total spa novice and are baffled by all the terms, check out the International Spa Association's glossary at www.experienceispa.com/glossary/glossary.html.

After a massage or body treatment, you might be told that you should relax as long as possible and not get up too fast in case you get dizzy. It's OK to sit there for a few minutes, but taking any more time is not cool and could keep other clients waiting.

Spa treatments are a tip-worthy service. Ask the spa ahead of time about tipping procedure, or just give the standard 15 to 20 percent. Scrimping on the tip is just plain rude and a bad idea if you plan to return.
